Money Mindfulness

If you hate your job and go to work every day filled with dread, that attitude translates to the money you earn from that job. Your paycheck is tinged with that ill will. While not devastating, this certainly is not as positive as you may like.

Be mindful of how you feel earning your money. Be in a state of ease, be in grace, be happy and in gratitude, even if you work in a job that you do not find satisfactory. Like attracts like. Your state of emotions, your attitude, is a beacon calling to you events that are in alignment with who you are in the present moment.

Understand that how you treat money on a day-to-day basis is the outward expression of your inner money space. Become conscious of how you speak about money. Become aware of your thoughts and feelings around money and what your inner critic has to say on the subject.

If you treat money as you would treat your best friend, then you are sending the message that you appreciate and value money. Like attracts like. Your thoughts and feelings attract other thoughts and feelings of a similar nature. If you want more money in your life, then value it, appreciate it, honor it. As you move into a higher level of consciousness around money, you might want to contemplate how you use money to advance your soul purpose. Money is energy. It is full of potential. As you give, freely and with consciousness, you increase the vibration of the money in your life. Gratitude, love, and appreciation—all those great vibrations—can really increase the level of your prosperity, both internal and external.

Money Fog

This month we are looking at the energy of money. Becoming conscious of how we view money is the first step in changing it up – stepping into a new relationship with money.  In the Money Web exercise you discovered your money story – the unconscious thoughts and beliefs you hold about money. And these beliefs, either consciously or unconsciously held, contribute to the actions you take. Or don’t take.

If you find yourself literally closing your eyes or shutting down your emotions when the topic of money arises, somewhere, sometime, a belief formed in your subconscious mind that going blind to money would ease your pain. Perhaps your father used the withdrawal of your allowance as a punishment for not doing what he expected. Maybe one or both of your parents taught you that only through the pain of hard work would you find the reward of more money.

This is what I call “Money Fog” – blipping out whenever the topic of money comes up.

If you’ve ever come home from the mall with a bag full of shoes or clothes that you don’t need, you know what I’m talking about. To lessen the pain, you become unconscious around your money energy. The following exercise introduces you to a tool that might be helpful in rooting out the childhood stories about money.

Exercise: The Money Timeline Tool

  1. On a sheet of paper, or in your journal, draw a straight line from one side of the page to the other. Now label the far-left side “birth” and the far-right side “today.” Divide the line into 7-year increments. Put a big dot at the point on the line representing age seven and label it “7 Years Old.” Mark another big dot and label it “14 Years Old.” Continue all the way along the timeline until you reach the end, and label that big dot with today’s date.
  2. Now, remember when you were seven years old. Sit in meditation and picture yourself at that age. See yourself as you might have been in a school picture or a photograph from a holiday celebration. Sit and breathe in the air—the energy—of being seven. Maybe you had a favorite book or loved a specific game such as jacks or tee-ball. Just remember. Think about money. Maybe the tooth fairy left you money. Maybe you received an allowance or money on birthdays and holidays. Remember what it was like to have money at the age of seven. For instance, I remember that half of my birthday money went into my savings account but the other half I could spend. I also remember that there were judgments placed on how I spent my money. My father often asked if I had spent my half wisely. There was a certain level of disappointment on his part if I chose to spend my cash on a frivolous item. I am thankful for the lesson in saving money, which has become a lifelong habit. I also have a tendency to be very serious when it comes to spending my “play money.” I am sure that some of my father’s judgment still resides in my space.
  3. Continue with this exercise, remembering what it was like to have money at age fourteen, at twenty-one, and so on until you reach the present time. Journal about your memories.

As we come to understand our deeply held beliefs about money, we are offered a choice – do we stay stuck in our outdated beliefs, or do we move beyond.

Using the technique of tapping is particularly helpful in rooting out some of the most insidious parts of our internal dialogue. See more on tapping here and here. You might also choose to use the tool blowing up a rose.  Removing these stories of pain allows you to move into a conscious awareness around the energy of money. As we remove the stories, the old baggage, we make room for something new.

Begin to think about how you want to view this energy of money. In the next post, we will learn more about moving out of poverty consciousness.

Money is Energy

“Money is congealed energy, and releasing it releases life possibilities.” Joseph Campbell

Yes, money is energy—a form of energy that you receive in exchange for contributions you make in the world. Most people, though, are unconscious of how money energy moves through their lives. As a society, we have tons of pictures, or stories built up around money.  These stories are lodged deep within our psyche and form the cornerstone of our current belief system around money. You might say that money is “dirty” or “the root of all evil.” You might not even realize that these phrases color your view of this neutral force of energy.

Money is a means of exchange. That is all. By stripping away the feelings and emotions surrounding money and embracing its energy as a tool, you can use this powerful source of potentiality to fuel your life of purpose. The first step in harnessing this tool’s power is to become conscious of how you speak about money. In doing the Money Web exercise, you may have become aware of how your thoughts about money affect your day to day life.

If you panic when money is “tight” then that’s what you are projecting out into the universe – panic and tightness!  And guess what?  That’s what you will receive in return – more squeeze on your existing money supply.  Instead, understand that money flows.  It’s an in and out motion, just like the ocean.

You wouldn’t sit on the beach frightened and worried about whether there will be another wave.  You know, with complete certainty, that the ocean will continue its flow, and the next wave is just a few moments away.  It’s the same with money.  Be conscious of the flow of money in your life.  Be conscious of how you think and feel about outflows.  When you start down the road of panic and worry, consciously choose another thought.  Instead of fear and panic, think, outflow/inflow, outflow/inflow.

And be realistic.  As a former accountant, I’m not going to tell you that it’s all wishful thinking.  You can’t just wish upon a star, or wait for your fairy godmother to show up.  You must participate.  You must choose.  If the outflow is greater than the inflow, then do something about it!  Be aware of how you spend your money, budget accordingly.  And as you do so, keep your thoughts away from panic and fear.  Still think outflow/inflow, outflow/inflow as you make the necessary changes to your budget.

You are what you think and feel. Thoughts and feelings are very powerful.  Especially around the topic of money!  Be a conscious creator.

Money Energy & Your Life of Joy

10 May, 2015 — Posted in: All About Chakras, Living In Joy Leave a Comment

rp_5928728030_a5cdca2890_z-300x200.jpg

This month we are looking at the role our chakras play in helping us live a life full of joy and inner peace. Chakras are wheels of energy that connect our energetic body to our physical body. When our chakras are operating at optimum levels, the impulses of energy they send to our physical body (via our hormones) help us feel calm and centered.

The first chakra, located at the base of our spine, is the energy center associated with safety and security. Often called the root chakra, this chakra flares open when it senses danger, sending adrenaline coursing through our bodies. Although the energy of money actually belongs in your third chakra – your power center, fears about lack of money often make a home in your first chakra.

Of course, it’s hard to live a life full of joy and inner peace if your first chakra flares open in panic and fear every time you open your checkbook!

Let us move this energy of money out of your first chakra—your survival space—and move it up to your third chakra, your power center. With the energy of money residing in your power center, you will be able to harness this force to work for you to help you manifest the life of your dreams.

Exercise 9.4: Moving Your Money Energy
1.    Close your eyes, and be in the center of your head. Breathe, and just be. Check your grounding cord and see your aura filled with your energy, no one else’s. Bring your attention to your first chakra. Now, visualize a rose in front of your first chakra. See the rose. Ask the rose to call to it all your feelings and emotions around the scarcity of money. See fear leave your first chakra and head into the rose. Watch as panic, scarcity, and lack enter that rose. Feel into your body, at the base of your spine. Open up that chakra, and allow all foreign energies, all thoughts and feelings that have come to you from your parents or others to leave this space. Feel all the harsh judgments about how much money is too much leave your space. Once you feel all the emotions calm, and the colors diminish, blow up that rose. See it explode in front of you. Feel your first chakra, at the base of your spine, being relaxed and clear.
2.    Now let’s move the remaining money energy—that energy that is yours and no one else’s—to its rightful place, the third chakra. See another rose in front of you, and have this rose pull out all the remaining money energy from your first chakra. See the colors as they move into this rose. When the rose is filled, intend for that rose to move from your first chakra to the space in front of your third chakra. See the rose floating around your solar plexus, a little bit higher than your belly button. Now pull that rose into your third chakra. Feel the colors of money merge with the other energies in your third. This is your power center. Feel a surge of power throughout your body as your third chakra lights up with this added fuel.
3.    Know that your money energy is where it belongs and that you have harnessed its power for your use. When you feel complete, open your eyes. Your money energy is now available to fuel your dreams. You may repeat this exercise if you begin to notice thoughts of judgment or panic around money. Money is a neutral tool that is all.

The way I view money has changed over the years. As I’ve come to terms with my inner critic’s voice, I’ve developed a level of self-confidence and self-worth in all areas of my life. I know that how I view money is a microcosm of how I view myself.

I am worthy. I am worthy of having money, and I am worthy of living a life full of joy and inner contentment. So are you.

tame-inner-criticThe exercise Moving Your Money Energy is excerpted from my book, Tame Your Inner Critic Find Peace & Contentment to Live Your Life on Purpose.  In fact the book includes a full chapter on the energy of money! I hope you will consider adding it to your must-read list. And I hope you will share this post with a friend or two.  Many blessings to you –

How You Treat Money Is The Way Money Will Treat You

25 January, 2014 — Posted in: The Energy of Money 2 Comments

3036481076_a57eb375a4

The principle I live by is this: How you treat money is the way money will treat you. Place your wallet in front of you. If you’ve had this particular wallet for some time, it may be dirty or torn. The bills may be crumpled up and sticking out in various directions, along with pieces of paper, sticky notes, bills, and grocery lists. Remembering that money is energy, consider whether your wallet, your money’s energetic “home,” is inviting. If you were money, would you want to live here?

I treat the money in my wallet like a dear and trusted friend. My money is not crunched up into tiny balls, it is lovingly handled. I straighten out the corners, smooth the bills, turn them so they all face the same way: forward and face up. As I’m doing this, I acknowledge money’s importance in my life. I appreciate money, and money appreciates me.

Next, become mindful and respectful of caring for the other places your money calls home. Reconciling your bank statements, keeping tabs on your retirement funds, cleaning out the spare change from your car—all are ways to honor your money. Apply the same organized, caring approach to your credit cards and the larger monetary world that goes beyond the cash in a wallet.

How you treat your money is an indication of how much worth you assign to it. Make a comfortable place for your money to call home—one that’s so nice that your money will want to stick around.
