Connecting with Joy: Your Sixth Chakra

25 June, 2015 — Posted in: All About Chakras, Living In Joy Leave a Comment

thirdeye12I believe we all want to live a life full of joy and inner peace. Some of us look for joy in the world of doing – expecting to find joy in our job, our community, or our friendships. But some of us know that joy is an inside job. It’s a feeling of the soul. We can have a great job and a wonderful set of friends, but if our soul is pining for something else, then joy is absent.

The question then becomes what is joy if it’s not found in our outer world of doing? For me, joy emanates from the center of my being outward. It is a feeling that originates in my Spirit-self and is expressed through my chakras, the home of our thoughts and feelings.

Chakras are energetic way stations connecting our Spirit to our physical body. When our chakras are operating at optimum levels, the impulses of energy they send to our physical body (via our hormones) help us feel calm and centered.

Daily meditation offers us an opportunity to quiet the outside voices—the noises of other peoples’ thoughts and feelings—and tune into our inner knowingness, our inner wisdom. When we meditate, our bodies relax and our minds quiet. Within this space of stillness, we communicate with our soul and touch into that feeling state of joy and inner bliss.

Our sixth chakra, often called the Third Eye, is the home of our personal sanctuary – the “place” we go when we meditate. The following meditation is one I often use to clean out the competing voices in my head so that I can tune into my inner guidance system and experience joy.

Meditation: Connecting with Joy

  1. Sit with your eyes closed, feet flat on the floor. Close the door to your room so that you will not be disturbed.
  2. Now imagine bringing all your awareness into the center of your head. Behind the eyes, between the ears, is your personal sanctuary. Some people call this the home of your Spirit-self. It is in the center of your sixth chakra. Bring all your attention to that space. With your eyes closed, feel all of your energy come to stillness in your personal sanctuary. Feel this space open up and envelop you. Be there now.
  3. Take a couple of deep breaths. Relax and just be.
  4. This is your space. It is for you alone. However, we often find that other people’s thoughts intrude into our quiet sanctuary. If you are thinking of yesterday’s conversation with someone or a phone call you will be making in the future, those thoughts may be overshadowing your ability to hear and intuit your internal wisdom.
  5. If you feel that all the thoughts of things to do and places to be start to encroach on this space, just tell those thoughts that you will be with them in a moment or two. Ask them to give you some space. Feel those thoughts empty out of your mind, leaving you relaxed and at peace.
  6. With your eyes still closed, visualize all unwanted thoughts, feelings, and tensions floating away like clouds in a summer sky. Watch as your to-do list floats by on a puff of air. Intend for all the thoughts of how you should behave and what you should do to drain out of your body. Feel them drop from your shoulders and allow gravity to move those “shoulds” out of your body forever.
  7. From this space of inner stillness, start to count each breath. On the inhale count one and on the exhale count two. Inhale again and count three, exhale and count four. That’s all. Inhale and count, exhale and count. Breathe. Count each breath.
  8. Continue to count your breaths. Inhale, one, exhale two. Over and over. If you lose track of counting then no worries, just start again. The object is not to count higher and higher, the object is to still the mind and breathe – that is all. Feel your body relax your mind grow quiet as you enter deeper and deeper states of consciousness.
  9. Now ask your Spirit-self what would bring you joy. Think about what brings you joy. Be in thought for a moment more. Just breathe and be. Bring to the surface of your memory times when you felt intense joy. Think of what you were doing when time stood still. Maybe you were surrounded by friends and family, or maybe you were alone.
  10. Touch into that deep feeling of joy. Bring it up from the depths of your memory and ask your Spirit self to surround you in that feeling-state now. Breathe. Allow this energy of joy to permeate every cell of your body. Feel joy reach into your heart, your throat, and your fingertips. Ask that this feeling of joy spread throughout your body and aura.
  11. What color is joy? Yes, feelings have color, and as you expand your sixth chakra, you can “see” or intuit the colors and vibrations of individual energies. What does joy look like to you? As joy expands to fill your whole body and aura, just allow. That is all. Breathe and be in joy.
  12. Sit in silence as you experience joy.
  13. After a while, you will notice that your mind begins to become more active as you almost float up and out into a more acute state of awareness. Before you leave your meditative state, think about how you want the rest of your day to unfold. Do you want to feel peaceful? Focused? However you would like your day to go, now is the time to intend it to be that way. We call this setting your intention. Think the thought, “I want to be focused yet full of joy today.” Know that as you think, so you shall be. Feel those qualities surround you now. Feel your body relaxed and at peace.
  14. When you are ready, open your eyes, and come fully out of meditation.

As you begin to meditate on a regular basis, you may tune into your inner guidance system more readily. Remember the feeling state of joy. Anytime during the day that you are feeling frazzled or out of sync, remember this meditation, and ask that your body and mind return to this blissful state of joy.

Clairvoyance: Clear Seeing

17 April, 2014 — Posted in: All About Chakras Leave a Comment

thirdeyeClairvoyance isn’t the mystical process we’re lead to believe, but instead a willed process of visualization.  It’s a matter of being able to systematically call up relevant information on demand.

Most people don’t consider themselves to be clairvoyant simply because we are not taught to be – we’re taught in verbal rather than visual language.  We’re often told that something is so, but we rarely take the initiative to “look” for ourselves.  There’s very little permission for this way of gaining information.

With our sixth chakra closed, it’s hard for the harmonic to develop between all seven body chakras. But, as we allow ourselves to access our intuition, we open this chakra.  That’s really all it takes – permission.  As we give ourselves permission to see the unseen -as we validate our intuitive hits – we open this chakra wider and wider.  The following exercise is a fun way to experiment with opening your third eye.

No Psychic Ability Required:  Door One or Door Two?

Oftentimes in life we are faced with an either/or, yes/no type situation.  We dither back and forth, weighing the alternatives with our rational, analytical brain.  Sometimes though it’s best to step back from what we see with our eyes and go within – accessing the whispers of our soul.

Here’s an exercise I teach and often use myself when I’m stuck between Option 1 and Option 2.

Pick something simple to start with: let’s say that you can’t decide whether to go to the beach or the mountains for an upcoming three day weekend.  You have pros and cons for each, yet you can’t make up your mind.  Take out a piece of paper and write the word Beach on one and Mountain on the other.  Turn the pieces of paper upside down so you can’t see which is which and shuffle them around until you don’t know which is in your left hand and which is in your right.  Hold one in your left hand during the following meditation and the other in your right hand during the meditation

Now close your eyes and get into a meditative space. Be alone, no phones, no computers to interrupt your reflective time.  Sit in a comfortable chair with your feet flat on the floor.  Bring yourself into balance by grounding to the earth. This is an important step as you want to be sure that foreign energy (the thoughts and feelings of others) is not a factor in your choice.

Breathe in and center.  Bring all your awareness to the center of your head.  Find your space, between your ears, behind your eyes, in the center of head, your seat of intuition. Breathe out and ground. Feel your body sink a little bit deeper into your chair. Breathe in and center, breath out and ground.  Repeat until you feel focused and calm.

Now imagine two doors in front of your closed eyes. See the door on the left with the word Door 1 standing out in nice graphics.  See the other door on the right with the word Door 2 in the same large graphic style.

Observe both doors – one on the left, one on the right.

Now, as you look at both doors, see whether your eyes are naturally drawn in one direction.  Which direction?  Left or right?

Does one door seem to shine or stand out more than the other one?

Describe out loud to yourself both doors. Get a good understanding of the qualities of both doors.  Decide which one is your choice – left Door 1, or right Door 2.

Now, come out of meditation. You’ve just used your intuition, your psychic ability, to listen to your own internal wisdom.  Not outside voices or the shoulds of the world, but your own sense of what is best for you.

Now, turn over the piece of paper in your hand that corresponds to your intuitive choice – the piece of paper in your left hand, representing Door 1, or the piece of paper in your right hand, representing Door 2.

Where will you spend your three day weekend?  The Beach or the Mountains??

Finding and living prosperity is all about checking in with your intuitive self.  Knowing deep within that you have the answers to what is best for you.  Looking within, often, and with awareness, is what brings this chakra into alignment with your highest and best self.

Cheers!  You’re officially using your clairvoyant abilities.  Wasn’t that fun and easy?

Sixth Chakra: Intuition, Prosperity and Your Third Eye

12 April, 2014 — Posted in: All About Chakras Leave a Comment

5759997022_7fa58a33c2What do the chakras have to do with prosperity?  Everything!

We create our life on the energetic level first.  We think a thought, we have a feeling, and then we develop a belief.  Only after all this energetic work has happened do we actually bring that belief into reality.  If a chakra is blocked, then our ability to manifest is also blocked.  Prosperity is from the Latin word prosperitas, and means ‘doing well’. It is the state of thriving and having success.  It often denotes being secure, safe and wealthy, both in money and opportunities. Bringing all seven chakras into a harmonic allows us to experience a heightened sense of comfort and ease – we are doing well – and we are prosperous.

As we clear each of the seven body chakras and bring them into harmony, we are syncing up our bodily needs (first chakra) with our emotions (second chakra), adding our internal fire (third chakra) and bringing it all in affinity with our fourth chakra, the seat of our self-worth.  We then add our ability to stand in and communicate our truth (fifth chakra) with our soul’s desires (our sixth chakra), and align it all with Source, represented by the seventh chakra, we manifest a world of inner peace, joy and prosperity.

Let’s dive in to one of my favorite chakras, the sixth.  Often called the third eye, the sixth chakra is located right above our eyebrows. From here we intuitively see the world around us. If our sixth chakra is healthy and free of other peoples’ energies, then we see the world as it is, without judgment. Opening up the sixth chakra and cleaning out all the thoughts and feelings of others, allows us to see our world as it truly is, connecting to our sixth sense – our ability to communicate with our soul – and bypassing all the judgments and should energy of the world around us.

I believe that we all have the ability to use our intuition to sense or intuit, that which we cannot see with our eyes.  Being in touch with this innate ability is something that we in the West have dismissed as woo-woo crazy.  I think it’s time to rethink this. In this post from November 2013, I discussed how to use creative visualization to open up our psychic abilities.  Much of the work I teach through blog posts and in my book is about opening up our ability to see the unseen.

Often called the “third eye,” the sixth chakra is located right above your eyebrows.  Seeing the world through our third eye allows us to experience a sixth sense, a way of sensing the energies of the thoughts and feeling of those people in our life. In most cases, young children have wide open sixth chakras. Over time, their parents and society in general, may invalidate these sixth sense experiences, causing a fog of uncertainty to descend over this energy center. But what can be shut can also be opened!

I believe that when we close our eyes and imagine or visualize we’re actually using our inner sight, our clairvoyance. We are actually activating our sixth chakra. When you utilize your imagination in the following exercise you’re not creating a fairy-tale, made-up experience. As you picture your grounding cord or imagine all your own energies zooming back into a Golden Sun, you are creating the experience of being grounded to the earth with your scattered energies flowing into your body on the energetic level. This is actually happening, we just can’t see it with our physical eyes. As we sit in meditation and let go of the need to see with our physical eyes, we tune in to our inner world of knowingness, our Spirit, our connection to the Divine.

One of the first steps in any meditation is getting yourself centered and present. Being centered means to be in present time, right here, right now; you’re not thinking of what happened in the past or about tomorrow’s to-do list. When you’re scattered, you’re less potent and unable to bring your full potential to the task at hand. So centering becomes a practice of mindfulness, being fully present, with all your thoughts and feelings in one place, a place of stillness.

This place of stillness is the home of our Spirit. Some call it the Seat of the Soul, and it’s located in the middle of our sixth chakra, our seat of intuition.

Exercise: Opening Your Sixth Chakra

  1. Sit in a comfortable chair with your feet flat on the floor. Close your eyes and breathe – in and out, in and out.  Focus on relaxing your body and being fully present.  Allow thoughts of future events and past conversations to melt away.  Breathe in and ground to the center of the earth.  Breathe out and sink a little bit deeper into your chair.  Breathe in and imagine bringing all of your focus to the center of your head.  Between your ears, behind your eyes, is the sixth chakra, the seat of your clairvoyance.  With each inhale bring more of your energy into the center of your head.  With each exhale feel yourself sink a little deeper in your chair as your grounding cord connects you to Mother Earth.
  2. Now, imagine a soap bubble out in front of your closed eyes.  Ask this soap bubble to fill in with the colors representing YOU, right now, at this particular moment.  Imagine the bubble filled with color.  If you can’t see it clearly, don’t worry, just imagine what it would be like, if you could see it.   That’s the key to developing your psychic abilities; at the beginning, just relax and allow your imagination to flow.  At the beginning it might be more a sense of knowing.  Relax and just go with it.
  3. Now “read” the bubble.  What do those colors mean to you?  Are they flowing around or are they static?  Are they “angry” colors, or “calm” colors?  Each person interprets the colors in a different way.  There is no right or wrong answer; just your answer for YOU.  That’s it.
  4. Now interpret what you see.  If you see a color that looks angry, check to see if you have some angry thoughts running through your head – even in the back of your head.  If you see or feel a color that looks like joy, then think about whether you are feeling some joy.  If you sense frustration or effort, then ask for that energy to show up in your bubble as a certain color.  Oftentimes when I ask a question like that I’ll see or sense a certain area of the soap bubble lighting up.  It’s almost like the bubble is saying, “Hey, check it out over here!  Here’s the information you asked to see.”
  5. Just look and see and imagine.  Have some fun and try to relax.  Just ask your intuition to show you what you need to know.  That’s it.
  6. When you are ready, open your eyes and come out of meditation.

Each person sees colors differently.  So go within and look at your soap bubble and begin to understand your world.  (You’re doing it!  You really just experienced being psychic!)
