Simplicity in all things is the theme of the month. Ridding our mind body and spirit of clutter so that we can hear, and act upon, our soul’s yearnings.
But listening to the soul is not so easy in today’s Western culture. It seems that we are bombarded by noise everywhere we go. Commercials blare from video display screens as we fill our cars with gas. The food court at the local mall has a video display of movie trailers for our enjoyment as we eat. Our cell phones, the internet and our TVs, fill our heads with jingles, extraneous pieces of data, and drama of the Hollywood set.
Where’s the time to think? To process? To engage in conversation with our life partners or our children? Where’s the time to sit in the park and watch the ladybugs dance along the spikes of grass?
I’m all for doing. That’s a big part of my life. But I also realize that I need to balance the doing with the being.
Just being.
Being open so that I can hear the underlying need expressed by an angry child. Being open and receptive enough to see the expressive look on my partner’s face as I walk into the room. Being present in my everyday life.
These are the experiences that are full of soul-full-ness. These are the experiences that are full of importance, meaning and joy.
The cell phones, the made-for-TV-dramas, the news bulletins of the latest mass shootings, the blaring noise taking up space in our minds. No. Not for me.
I choose quiet. I choose calm. I choose intimate conversations with neighbors as we enjoy a cup of tea. I choose whether I turn off the evening news and the violent crime shows each prime-time evening. I choose the amount of stimulus I allow in my life.
Simple, quiet and calm. That’s my choice. That’s how I define a simple life.
